twenty four

The most fun nights present themselves when you don't try. I remember growing up as a kid and spending most weekends with my family - back in the day when none of us kids had jobs and we were so naive. Those days were fun.

My dad always had control of what it was we listened to in the car or in our backyard during cookouts. He went through musical phases - some more tolerable than others. Still, I owe a great deal of my musical taste to my father. As a kid, I used to get a kick when he'd play Vicente and sing along. Slowly, but surely, I acquired a taste for that sort of music, but it wasn't until recently that I started to fully digest it.

I'm not sure why, but I'm going through a spanish phase. Perhaps this is why I wanted nothing more than to spend my birthday at home with my family and a few friends cooking out and listening to a mix of music - just like back in the day. It was effortless. Sure, my sister's decorations were a little overdone but a cheesy gal deserves nothing less. It was the perfect twenty fourth birthday. Cheers.

i would walk 500 miles...

Back in the day when VHS was still common and I was still anticipating my first kiss, I used to spend my nights watching Benny and Joon. I was so in love with the movie. I was fascinated (still am) with Quinn (played by Johnny Depp). It was the first time I fell for a fictional character, fell for the figment of someone else's imagination. There was something about Quinn's spirit and soul, his immunity to his own inhibitions, his imagination, and well his style of course. I had no idea what it meant to be whimsical before him. He had me as soon as I pressed that play button.

He had me then and he still has me now. I hadn't seen the movie in so long since I no longer had access to a VHS player, so I ordered the DVD online. It arrived a few days ago, and already I've seen it several times. And thus, the resurrection of my obsession. The movie inspired today's outfit, and the photo shoot. Oh and another reason the movie is great...The Proclaimers' song I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles). No surprise there, classic movie equals classic song. Check out the preview and the music video if you're curious:

golpes que da la vida

I have a thing for cumbias. I drove to Austin the other day, and I spent a good portion of the way back listening to La Sonora Dinamita. I decided then that nothing would please me most then to dance my way into my 24th birthday - dancing to cumbias of course. Seriously. Now, it's just a matter of making that happen. Here's hoping. I always want what I can't have. Oh well, that's life - nomas son golpes que da la vida. What do you do? You enjoy it best you can.
