so come out of your cave walking on your hands

I finally got around to purchasing the Mumford and Sons album. A few of their songs have been stuck on repeat in my mental jukebox for awhile now, so I figured I'd check the entire album out. The Cave inspired today's post.

we can't be friends

Every now and then, my mother does me proud and rents a surprisingly good movie. This week it was The Romantics. It's a complicated, unconventional love story - aren't they all? Seriously though, it's an interesting - boy meets girl then marries her friend - story. The dialogue is sharp and the characters are complex - to say the least.
Timing is an interesting thing. I know it's just a movie, but it made me feel better - sorta. I could relate to one of the characters - sorta. The song I posted above is featured in the film. As my sister put it, "It's such a Tina song." It meets all the requirements for my 17th guilty pleasure: female vocalist, acoustic guitar, and love sick lyrics. Enjoy:

take this sinking boat and point it home

This week alone I think I've watched the movie Once three times - one of those times being earlier today. It's my second favorite musical. Today's outfit was very much inspired by the female lead character. Her style is very consistent throughout the film: below the knee dresses, thick-knit scarves, and oversized blazers. It was a bit too warm to sport my blazer or a scarf, so I went for an oversized cardigan and a bare neck instead.

It's a great movie and a beautiful story, but it's the music that really sucks you in - specifically the lyrics. Several of the songs incorporate this sort of marriage between hope and despair. Doesn't make much sense, does it? I say 'marriage' because both emotional states are equally present in their songs - the music is the love that brings the two together in one spectrum. Still doesn't make sense, does it? I guess that's the beauty of it all. Very often it's hard to express what it is you really feel because very often you feel two completely opposite things at the same time: like hope and despair.

It's a definite struggle for the two lead roles. Overall the movie does an excellent job of portraying or articulating something real. There is no happy ending - not your typical mainstream sort at least. It just ends. It's kind of sad...but at least it's honest.

These songs are part of the reason why I've got the movie on repeat:

redhead senorita

These photos were taken at a shack off of Shiloh. I was very pleased with the outcome. I dedicate these photos to the White Stripes.
Earlier this month the band announced their breakup. I was initially saddened with the news (mostly because I didn't get to see them live), but upon reading their final words my frown turned upside down:
"The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing our experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful."
If only all breakups were that easy and/or put so well. They will play on in my mental jukebox forever.
